in honor of Pioneer Day around here, we've been listening to The Undaunted.
this is the story about the "hole in the rock" pioneers. i listened to it a few years back and pulled it back up on the ipod on the 24th. our seven year old loves it and i hardly want to turn it off.
i bring this up because yesterday a certain part in the book struck me so hard and i haven't been able to get it out of my head.
a little history. these people were not going on this expedition because they needed a place to lay down roots. they were already established, most of them quite successful where they were living. they were called to go. they sold their businesses, homes and took their families on a near impossible trek.
at one point after they had been gone a month, without knowing exactly what was up ahead and if they were going to find a way through this really rough country, they had to decide if they would go forward or back. without knowing what was ahead.
to say the least, this was a very, very difficult decision. they trusted in the Lord and in the opinion of scouts that had only gone so far.
they decided to go forward. why? because they were called to go forward.
a quote from one of the Danish characters, "we must go through, even if we cannot".
after the decision was made and unanimously sustained, there was silence and then someone calls out, "ho, ho to the San Juan!" and then its followed by several more of the same.
this gives me chills every time and hear it. at this typing i have tears. these people knew they were doing the impossible and heading straight forward into some seriously trying circumstances. yet, they gave it their all.-their absolute all. that's what i feel when i hear, "ho, ho to the San Juan!"
so many of us are where we are not by our choosing but because the Lord saw fit to send us a trial. we can look straight ahead and know that the impossible can be done. we can look straight ahead and know that the Lord will help us accomplish what He has asked of us. we can look forward with faith. faith in ourselves and faith in our God who made the mountains we climb.
